The Fuel Assistance Program begins November 1st and ends on April 31st providing assistance with heating bills to over 9,000 households annually in the Self Help service area.

Eligibility for the program is based on the following income guidelines.  This year those households at 200% of poverty will have access to funding.  It is our hope that the program will serve even more households that are having difficulty in paying for heat.

Along with receiving assistance in paying heating bills, Fuel Assistance clients also benefit from discounts on utility bills    and telephone bills.  Over a 12 month period, this can mean a big difference to a household.

High Energy Users are households that meet or surpass a threshold established by the Department of Housing and Community Development.  A sum over and above the established benefit levels is allotted to the high energy user households.

Fuel Assistance works closely with the Weatherization and HEART-WAP Programs in coordinating efforts to establish eligibility for the Weatherization and HEART-WAP Programs.

Fuel Assistance staff are proud of the effort extended on behalf of Fuel Assistance clients in working with various social service agencies in obtaining services that may be needed by our clients.

Self Help continues to work  in conjunction with Citizens Energy Corporation (CEC) in implementing the CEC Energy Program which allows eligible households to receive a reduced price oil delivery.  Households are responsible to pay one half the "going rate" per gallon of oil.  With the anticipated increase in oil prices, this will be an important program for our clients who have expended all Fuel Assistance benefits.

Self Help works with volunteer agencies within our service area in providing a local intake site for those who are interested in applying for Fuel Assistance and find it more convenient to apply in their own community.
