The positive energy and intelligence of young people should be liberated and enlisted in solving problems facing our society. Young men and women who are low income and live in low income communities want to help revitalize their neighborhoods and will do so if given the opportunity. The desire to do meaningful work is universal.
Community-based organizations, such as Self Help, need to be given the resources to solve local problems and to mobilize people, including neighborhood youth.
The fundamental reason for YouthBuild's success is that the program design is exactly what young men and women are seeking. They are looking for work that is of value; concentrated skills training that gives them access to a well paying job; a means to continue their education; personal and peer support to overcome problems; a set of positive values strong enough to compete successfully with the culture of the streets and give meaning to life; and a clear vision of who they can become.
You can expect to receive an excellent academic program where you will spend 50% of your time studying for and preparing to take your GED. You can expect to receive a comprehensive construction training where you will spend the other 50% of your time learning skills and actually building and rehabilitating housing.

And....you will get paid for doing it! YouthBuild participants receive $100 a week for full participation in the program.
